August 31st is a very important date in our household. It’s the day our adorable, sassy, energetic and bundle of love puppy came into this world. Although she didn’t really enter into our lives until October, her birthday is a very special one. And yes, I realize she’s a dog but to us she really is part of the family (I don’t care how crazy people think we are).
Lily came to us during a period of our lives when our hearts were totally shattered. We were trying to piece ourselves back together as grief allows us to do, but for me personally, there was a big black void. The year before Lily was a year of hell. We lost our first boxer unexpectantly, we had some personal troubles and then of course our biggest loss, the loss of our baby boy Liam (18.5 weeks into pregnancy). This heart seemed so empty and life seemed so darn dark. It was a battle.
Along came Lily; love at first sight. The quietest of the bunch, sitting so calmly with those big eyes looking up at us as we made our first visit to pick out our little girl (later we would find out she was probably the most energetic of the bunch)! We had first choice of all the puppies of the litter and I believe Lily picked us. The sweetest soul who could fit into the palm of your hand. We would soon venture out two more times about 3 hours away, to visit and then take home this cutie.
Today marks her FIRST birthday and what a year it has been. I am so thankful for her. She truly is a ray of sunshine (when she isn’t driving us crazy ;)) and provides the love we needed. She makes us laugh with her quirky/sassy personality, she keeps me fit (with her very playful and energetic demeanour) and when I’m having an awful day and the tears can’t seem to stop, this little one curls up beside me and licks them all away. Not to mention, she is really great for parental training. Beau and I have learned a lot about teamwork, being worried constantly, disturbed sleep, catering to another life (yes, I know it’s not the same as a baby) and loving something A LOT.
HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY to my little puppy princess.
Thank you for bringing light into darkness.
Time to party!
